Brazil leads in renewable energy production of plastics.

Braskem, Brazil's largest petrochemical company, has put into operation a 200000 ton/year 'green' ethylene plant in triunfo, Brazil, at the end of September 2010, which is the world's first plant to produce ethylene based on sugarcane derived ethanol. This ethylene is supplied to Braskem's high density polyethylene (HDPE) and linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE) switching units in triunfo. Most of the products produced are for export, and more than 80% of the output of this device has been sold overseas‘ Green grade products can be used to produce HDPE film, HDPE blow molding, HDPE injection molding and LLDPE film. Its customers include Johnson Johnson, proctergamble and Toyota. Braskem also decided to use sugarcane derived ethanol to build a 100000 ton/year polypropylene (PP) plant, which is scheduled to be put into operation in 2013

in addition, Braskem signed a contract with Novozymes in December 2009 to establish a research partner to develop the production process of sugarcane derived PP to be confirmed. The five-year plan will carry out the development of enzyme strains.
